The umpires are slowing down the game in unexpected ways. I always thought it would be instant replay and challenges that would slow down the game, and that really doesn’t effect much except getting the call right. It’s the new head umpire position that really is an issue. Previously, the head umpire sat behind the defensive front, generally around or behind the linebackers. Naturally, this puts them in the field of play often with the potential to effect plays (getting in the way of pass routes or running lane). This is of course a problem for umpire welfare, being an incidental standing target for a 200+ running back definitely brings cause for concern.
Now they line up behind the offense in the backfield, which takes them longer to get to. Yes, it takes them out of the play, assuming that there isn’t a crazy scramble or sack that occurs. In addition, they have to set the ball before the snap, something that gets in the way of hurry up offenses and namely the Colts. In the final two minutes of the half the rule is disregarded and referees stand in the old spot, to prevent getting in the way of the hurry up offense but it’s just not enough. The NFL needs to really rethink this rule, it’s just not working. Granted it saves the umpires from potential harm, but they’re still in the way of the action just not in danger of it.
